Bjelašnica mountain, rising to 2,067 m above sea level just 30 km south-west of Sarajevo, is one of the finest hiking destinations in the western Balkans. Ancient shepherd paths wind through beech forests, across wildflower meadows and along the dramatic rim of the Rakitnica Canyon — one of the deepest gorges in Europe. A Frame Chalets is the ideal base camp: wake up, step outside, and the trails begin at your doorstep.
The Best Hiking Routes from A Frame Chalets
The Umoljani Shepherd's Circuit (5 km, easy) is the perfect morning warm-up — a peaceful loop through a living medieval village, with views across the Bjelašnica plateau and back to the chalets. The Rakitnica Canyon Rim Trail (8 km, moderate) follows the cliff edge above one of the deepest canyons in the western Balkans; on a clear day the sheer limestone walls plunge 800 m into the river below. For experienced hikers, the Treskavica Plateau Traverse (12 km, challenging) crosses high alpine terrain rarely visited by tourists, passing glacial lakes and 360° panoramic ridges. In peak summer, the Lukomir Ridge Loop (4.5 km) begins at the highest permanently inhabited village in Bosnia — an UNESCO-protected cluster of medieval stone houses at 1,469 m — and rewards with jaw-dropping views of three mountain ranges.
Wildlife, Flora & Wilderness
The forests and meadows around Bjelašnica are among the most biodiverse in Bosnia. In spring (May–June), endemic wildflowers carpet the high pastures — gentians, mountain peonies and orchids that are rarely found elsewhere in Europe. The forests shelter red deer, roe deer, wild boar and — further from the chalets — brown bears and wolves. Birdlife is exceptional: the Rakitnica gorge is home to peregrine falcons and griffon vultures. Our chalet team can provide trail maps and connect you with certified local mountain guides for multi-day routes.
Practical Information & Getting Here
A Frame Chalets is located on Bjelašnica mountain, Bosnia and Herzegovina, approximately 30 minutes by car from Sarajevo city centre and 45 minutes from Sarajevo International Airport. The chalet reception provides trail maps, weather forecasts and equipment recommendations. Guided hiking excursions can be arranged with 24 hours' notice. We recommend waterproof footwear year-round and warm layers even in summer — mountain weather at 1,850 m changes rapidly.
